Bharat had been the bedrock of farming technologies and domesticating animals. Our Rishis and forefathers had immense knowledge on agriculture and hence our India was the most sought out place in the world for its richness. Farmers were self sufficient. Cows and Bulls were the only source of manure and were treated as the life line of a farmer and not a mere milking machine.
However the advent of foreign rule and greed to produce more and make money led to indiscriminate use of chemicals in agriculture. Thanks to the limited vision and policies of our successive governments, the Green Revolution and the White Revolution, we have slowly but steadily eroded the richness of our soil. This has led to an increasing dependence on chemicals, machineries and investments by our farmers leading to alarming number of farmer suicides.
Today there is a whole new generation that only had seen failures of their parents in the field of agriculture and moving away from farming.
At Goveda foundation we like to revive the most successful practices of our forefathers, revitalise our soil, create an interest in the young minds towards farming and thereby create a self sufficient society.
We at Goveda foundation had taken up Shri Subhash Palekar’s Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) methodologies for the purpose stated above. ZBNF helps to revive even a dead soil over time with minimal water resources.
Goveda foundation as a first step has demonstrated at its own cost the implementation of ZBNF in One acre land to the farmers in Seyyur Village , Arakonam Taluk, Tamilnadu.
It has been agreed to lease the surrounding 7 acres and develop the same as a model natural Farm for the purpose of educating more and more farmers.
During this initial plantation drive more than 2500 plants as given below has been planted in the 1 acre area:
Planted So far | Proposed to add | ||
---|---|---|---|
Banana | 270 | Tuar Dal | 500 |
Pomegranate | 270 | Marigold | 600 |
Papaya | 270 | Chilli | 1200 |
Seetha Phal | 270 | Pumpkin | 200 |
Drumstick | 600 | Ginger | 1200 |
Pineapple | 150 | Green gram, Bengal Gram, Beans Black gram | |
Lemon | 16 | Mango |
In less than a year the entire place will look like a mini forest. The Eco system of the place will change. The retention of rain water will increase and so will the water storage in the wells.
This forest will produce some yield or the other all through the year giving regular income to the farmer as required and the need for loan, interest and subsequent suicide will vanish.
Protecting Indian breed cows is an integral part of ZBNF. The only manure used for developing the land is Jeewamirtham, a mixture of pure Desi cow dung, urine and certain naturally available ingredients.
In chemical farming, A cow becomes a liability after lactation stops. But in ZBNF, which is an integrated farming model founded on the principles of our forefathers, the cow is useful until its natural death. The left outs of the harvest is all that is required to take care of our desi cows as they are naturally resistant to heat and decease.
Goveda foundation has procured two desi Ongole breed cows for this purpose and have housed the same in its Goshala.
You can contribute to this noble effort both monetarily and through active participation.
